Jimmy Mazzy was honored as the 2019 American Banjo Museum’s Hall of Fame inductee in the category of Performance, 4 string Banjo September 6, 2019.

Hall of Fame ceremonies are held the weekend following Labor Day each year, as part of the ABM’s Banjofest weekend.

Jimmy Mazzy and Friends are featured on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at Bemis Hall, 15 Bedford Rd. Lincoln MA.

Jimmy can be heard with the Wolverines, Eli & the Hot Six, The Williams Reunion Jazz band, The Riverboat Stompers (Steve Strauss), Sarah Spencer’s Transatlantic Jazz Band and Rick MacWilliams Trio and many more..  He is prominently featured in about 40 recordings, most notably the 15 Wolverine cds.

In case you don’t know Jimmy Mazzy, here is what is listed in Wikipedia:

“Jimmy Mazzy is a traditional jazz banjo player and vocalist.”
According to jazz writer Scott Yanow, he “has been a popular attraction in the trad jazz circuit since the late ’70s.”[1] He has performed extensively in the United States and worldwide, appearing at jazz festivals across the country including the Sacramento, San Diego, Essex, and several Connecticut festivals. He is a member of The Paramount Jazz Band and the Wolverine Jazz band and also freelances with other groups including the Yankee Rhythm Kings, the Magnolia Jazz Five, and the Back Bay Ramblers.

In 2002, he was voted the No. 1 traditional jazz banjoist, and No. 2 male singer in the Jazzology and Mississippi Rag readership polls.[2] Mazzy has performed regularly with Jeff Hughes, John Clark, Stan McDonald, Ross Petot and many other traditional jazz musicians.”

NOTES:
Michel Lavigniac banjo player from Cape Cod died September 18th.   He leaves behind loved ones on both sides of the Atlantic who will keep the spirit of this good man alive so long as the memories he gave us endure. In lieu of flowers, the next time you see a street musician, give them a little something in honor of The Flying Frenchman.
 John Chivers died September 3rd.  Robin Verdier has his obituary on site.   A service in his memory will be held on Sunday October 13, 2019 at 3pm at the Plymouth Congregational Church in Plymouth, NH,  Musicians who knew him, you are asked to participate:   http://sites.google.com/site/verdiersite/

Steve Caddick: “Grammy and Oscar winner Eddy Davis, Band Leader for Woody Allen’s Jazz Band, yes the movie Director, left his banjo with me after the convention to replace the frets on his custom Ome Banjo. He specifically wanted me to do it for him. I am honored. I finished fretting it and assembling it today. Here is a photo of it in my hands!

Mike Hashem of Ossipee New Hampshire
Mike is a ‘Journeyman’ banjo player and antique collector.  In the 70’s he worked at Sweeney’s Gay Nineties in Rowley, MA. He has performed from Hawaii to New Orleans, and was featured performer with Pete Fountain on the Mississippi Queen Steamship Line millennium cruise.  He won the 1985 U.S. Open Banjo Championship, and performs regularly with his group “Dixieland Strollers” and with the Connecticut Festival Jazz Band and numerous other groups..

Mike has an excellent CD backed by Scott Philbrick on cornet, Mel Deveau trumpet, Noel Kaletsky reeds and Chuck Stewart, tuba.  All American Banjo Classics.  The front and back of the CD are pictures of  his 1934 Gibson Mike has an excellent CD backed by Scott Philbrick on cornet, Mel Deveau trumpet, Noel Kaletsky reeds and Chuck Stewart, tuba.  This is an All-American Tenor Banjo, of which approximately 10 were made.
