11 Wed 7:30pm Norm Nichols will tickle our fancy with “Lighten Up III”  Classic Jazz at the Lincoln Library, 3 Bedford Rd. Lincoln MA  Recordings & Lectures/Discussions of our kind of music every 2nd Wednesday,  Tarbell room Unless otherwise noted. (781) 259-8465 "This program is a continuation of, and third go at, “Lightening Up” our jazz listening. This time I depart from the humorous perspective to consider disputes over what players deserve to be called jazzmen and what instruments qualify as jazz instruments. Regarding players, many do not believe that Willie Nelson plays jazz, but his playing with Winton Marsalis refutes that opinion. As for instruments, some feel that the ukulele should not be considered to be a jazz instrument, but Roy Smeck’s playing of Tiger Rag on the ukulele reveals the marvelous polyphonic effects that the instrument is capable of, which are certainly part of the jazz idiom. I will also consider the question of what draws us to jazz. Is it the music or the players, or is it even possible to determine which has the greater claim on our emotions. Come along on January 11th to weigh in on this question."

The ballet was most recently performed to seven sold-out shows at the Kennedy Center this past November and got rave reviews. The Washington Post wrote: " Bringing in Boston-based jazz expert Billy Novick and his band ... was a brilliant move. The result is that for its musical splendors alone "Gatsby" is a remarkable event, an evening of explosive, ticklish and swooning live jazz (songs of the era, filled out with Novick's compositions), played with a verve to spark your thirst for hooch. Especially wonderful are the dark and cinematic early Ellington tunes ("East St. Louis Toodle-oo," "Saturday Night Function"), percolating jammers such as Tommy Dorsey's sly "It's Tight Like That," and Irving Berlin's ruminative "What'll I Do?" -- which echoes through the ballet as the theme for Jay Gatsby's romantic longings." The Bo & Bill Winiker quartet play a cool brand of jazz that was conceived on the west coast of the United States in the mid 1950s and early 60s, created by artists such as Chet Baker, Stan Getz, and Gerry Mulligan. It is the antithesis of the wild and furious style of jazz that was being played on the east coast at the time, with its light and melodic style and smooth hypnotic drum beat. The west coast style of jazz is driving but subtle and tasteful—it is toe tapping jazz. This is an evening to make a jazz lover out of skeptics! Call 617-864-1933 for reservations
