Jun 10-15 The NEW ORLEANS TRADITIONAL JAZZ CAMP, co-directed by Banu Gibson and Leslie Cooper, runs from Saturday, June 10 (orientation and jam session) thru Thursday, June 15 (camper concert) – with a “lagniappe” jam session on Friday, June 16 – at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel, located right in the middle of the French Quarter. The camp’s mission statement, as explained on its website, is to teach and perpetuate the musical style of early jazz music as it originated in New Orleans; to create a yearly musical event in New Orleans that will raise the level of musicianship and knowledge of early jazz; to expose traditional jazz to a larger audience; to attract musicians from around the world to NOLA to learn traditional jazz. The faculty is Banu Gibson and Leah Chase (vocals), Jamil Sharif (trumpet), David Sager and Rick Trolsen (trombone), Steve Pistorius, David Boeddinghaus and Kris Tokarski (piano), Katie Cavera (banjo/guitar), Ed Wise and Kerry Lewis (bass), Danny Rubio (tuba), Gerald French (drums), and Tom Fischer, Ray Moore and myself (reeds). In addition to multiple nightly jam sessions at jazz spots in the Quarter, extra-curricular activities include a massive jazz camp street parade from the hotel to Jackson Square, and easy access to world-renowned music venues throughout the Quarter and on vibrant Frenchman Street, just outside it. Note: THIS CAMP IS LOOKING FOR ADDITIONAL CLARINET APPLICANTS. My personal promise: I’ll make you into a monster on that thing. Try me. Registration/info: http://www.
